Your Chinese zodiac element comes from the last digit of your birth year: 0 or 1 is Metal, 2 or 3 is Water, 4 or 5 is Wood, 6 or 7 is Fire, 8 or 9 is Earth. But the element that describes you most is your Day Master, which comes from your full Ba Zi birth chart.

What element am I by birth year?
Look at the last digit of your birth year. That digit gives your element, as in the table below. Odd digits are Yin and even digits are Yang.
| Last digit | Element | Polarity |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Metal | Yang |
| 1 | Metal | Yin |
| 2 | Water | Yang |
| 3 | Water | Yin |
| 4 | Wood | Yang |
| 5 | Wood | Yin |
| 6 | Fire | Yang |
| 7 | Fire | Yin |
| 8 | Earth | Yang |
| 9 | Earth | Yin |
So 1985 is Wood, 1990 is Metal, and 2003 is Water. Two elements share each pair of digits, one Yang and one Yin.
Was I born in the year before? The Chinese New Year catch
Yes, you might have been. The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and mid February.
If you were born in January or early February, check the date of Chinese New Year for your birth year. If you were born before it, use the year before. A person born on 10 January 1990 is still in the 1989 year, so their element is Earth, not Metal.
What are the Chinese zodiac elements for each year?
The 12 animal signs and the 5 elements move together. Every animal gets each element in turn, so the full cycle takes 60 years. That is why 2024 is a Wood Dragon and 2026 is a Fire Horse.
| Year | Element and animal | Year | Element and animal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1980 | Metal Monkey | 2020 | Metal Rat |
| 1981 | Metal Rooster | 2021 | Metal Ox |
| 1982 | Water Dog | 2022 | Water Tiger |
| 1983 | Water Pig | 2023 | Water Rabbit |
| 1984 | Wood Rat | 2024 | Wood Dragon |
| 1985 | Wood Ox | 2025 | Wood Snake |
| 1986 | Fire Tiger | 2026 | Fire Horse |
| 1987 | Fire Rabbit | 2027 | Fire Goat |
| 1988 | Earth Dragon | 2028 | Earth Monkey |
| 1989 | Earth Snake | 2029 | Earth Rooster |
Remember the New Year catch. These years run from Chinese New Year to the next Chinese New Year.
What does each element mean?
The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, known in Chinese as 五行 (wǔ xíng). Each one stands for a quality of life. Here is a kind, short way to read them.
- Wood: growth and drive.
- Fire: warmth and expression.
- Earth: steadiness and care.
- Metal: clarity and structure.
- Water: depth and wisdom.
No element is better than another. Each has strengths, and each has a side that needs care.
Is my birth year element my real element?
Not quite. Your birth year element is only one part of your chart. In Ba Zi (八字, bā zì), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, your chart is built from the year, month, day and hour of your birth.
The element of your day of birth is called your Day Master. In Ba Zi, the Day Master is the element that describes you most. Two people born in the same year can have very different Day Masters. That is why a year-only answer often feels half right.
You cannot work out your Day Master from the year alone. You need the exact date, and ideally the time and place of birth. Our free Ba Zi chart does this for you.
How do the five elements link to the body in Chinese medicine?
In Chinese medicine, each element links to an organ and to an emotion. This is the same map that qigong teachers use. Here it is in one table.
| Element | Organ | Emotion |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Liver | Anger |
| Fire | Heart | Desire |
| Earth | Spleen | Worry |
| Metal | Lungs | Grief |
| Water | Kidneys | Fear |
Many sources name joy as the Fire emotion. In our teaching, the Fire issue is desire, the pull of wanting more.
Qigong is a complementary practice. Use it alongside regular medical care, never instead of it. See your doctor if you have ongoing pain, strong emotions that will not settle, or any symptom that worries you.
How does White Tiger Qigong use the elements?
At White Tiger Qigong, your Day Master and the five elements are part of how a personal practice prescription is built. We look at your chart as one guide to what to practice, and then adjust as you learn.
In 5 Element Qigong, each element also has an animal:
- Water: Dragon
- Metal: Tiger
- Wood: Leopard
- Earth: Snake
- Fire: Crane
These are not the same as your zodiac animal. They are the animals we use in our qigong teaching to carry the quality of each element.
Is Chinese astrology science?
No. Chinese astrology, including the zodiac and Ba Zi, is a traditional system. It is not a scientific test, and it cannot predict your future or diagnose you.
Many people use it as a mirror. It gives you words for your habits, your strengths and the places where you get stuck. Take what is useful and leave the rest. The organ and emotion map above comes from Chinese medicine, which is also a traditional system with its own long history.
Can two people share the same element?
Yes, and most people do. About one in five people shares your birth year element. Your Day Master, and the other elements in your chart, are what make your pattern your own.
What should I do with my element?
Start by noticing. Read the one line for your element above and ask if it sounds like you. Then read the emotion for the same element and ask if it shows up when you are tired or stressed.
After that, get your full chart. It shows all five elements, which ones are strong and which are quiet. That is a much better starting point than a single year.
