Why White Tiger Qigong Teaches 11 Pieces of Brocade, Not 8
The canonical form of Ba Duan Jin, the "Eight Pieces of Brocade", has been written about since China's Song dynasty, more than 850 years ago. It has been tested in dozens of randomized trials, most of them in China. It is used in rehabilitation in some Chinese hospitals, and Chinese medical and qigong bodies drafted a standard for its use in health settings in 2026.
In a 2026 randomized trial in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 216 adults in China with high-normal blood pressure practised Ba Duan Jin five days a week. After 12 weeks, their 24-hour systolic blood pressure had dropped about 3 mmHg more than a group doing self-directed exercise. The difference held at one year, and results were similar to brisk walking.
It is a well-researched practice with promising results for several conditions, though many studies are small.
The Three Additional Movements
White Tiger Qigong adds three further movements from our own teaching tradition:
- 9.Parting Waves (Fen Lang)
- 10.The Turtle Comes Out of its Shell (Gui Chu Ke)
- 11.Guiding the Sword (Yin Jian)
"Eleven Pieces of Brocade" is our English name for the canonical 8 plus these 3. At Alba you learn all 11 movements in week 1 (Level 1, Jing, the body). Week 2 (Level 2, Qi) deepens the breath, and Level 3 (Shen, spirit) continues online.
The Three Pillars Behind Every Movement
White Tiger Qigong teaches Ba Duan Jin through three integrated lenses:
- ◆Neuroscience: autonomic regulation, vagal tone, and meditative states
- ◆Sports Science: fascial elasticity, kinetic chains, force transmission, tissue loading
- ◆Chinese Medicine: meridians, organs, Three Treasures, Five Elements, and prescription frameworks
Ancient Wisdom. Modern Science. Living Tradition.

Tevia Feng: A Healing Qi Journey
"I was born with chronic illness and constant suffering. At the age of 7, I turned to martial arts, Qigong, and meditation to heal myself. That decision changed the course of my life.
Driven by a search for true healing, I traveled across China and the world, training with legendary Qigong masters. From them I learned rare breathing methods, powerful energy practices, and ancient healing systems. These teachings have become the foundation of White Tiger Qigong today.
The 11 Pieces of Brocade is one of those teachings. The version I will share with you in Vietnam is not the form you will find on YouTube. It is older, deeper, and more complete, preserved within an inner Daoist lineage that predates the modern standardization of Chinese internal arts. I have spent over 40 years refining how to teach it for modern bodies and modern minds.
Qigong has been with me through my darkest times and my greatest joys. It is not just a practice. It is my lifelong companion. And in February 2027, at the hot springs of Alba, I want to transmit it to you the way it was transmitted to me."
Tevia Feng
- Trained with top Chinese masters of Qigong for over 40 years
- Published 3 books in multiple languages on the art and science of Qigong
- Named a top-3 Qigong instructor in Indonesia
- Trained 70,000+ students internationally, including world-champion athletes, medical doctors, and terminally ill patients

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there scientific evidence supporting Ba Duan Jin?
Yes. Recent research, including the BLESS randomized controlled trial, shows measurable benefits for blood pressure, sleep, anxiety, balance, and recovery. We integrate this evidence into the full training path.
Why does White Tiger Qigong teach 11 Pieces of Brocade instead of 8?
The canonical form is the 8 Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin). White Tiger Qigong adds 3 further movements from our own teaching tradition: Parting Waves (Fen Lang), The Turtle Comes Out of its Shell (Gui Chu Ke), and Guiding the Sword (Yin Jian). "Eleven Pieces of Brocade" is our English name for the combined practice.
What is the Hard Qigong (Ying Gong) tier? Who is eligible?
Hard Qigong is an advanced iron-body method taught on-site during Level 2 week. It is open to students who have completed a White Tiger Qigong Level 2 training. We verify eligibility at enrollment.
I am over 60 / I have a chronic condition. Is this safe for me?
Ba Duan Jin is one of the gentlest and most adaptable Qigong systems and is used in clinical contexts. We provide modifications for all levels. Please consult your healthcare provider and disclose conditions at enrollment.
What is the difference between Path A and Path B?
Path A is personal mastery (Levels 1-2, non-teaching). Path B is full teacher certification (Levels 1-5), including assessments and directory listing.
I am a Five Animal / 8 Trigram / Dragon Meridian student. Does this overlap?
No. The 11 Pieces of Brocade is a distinct form family with its own choreography and prescription logic. It complements, not duplicates, other White Tiger systems.
What if I cannot make it to Vietnam?
The in-person Vietnam component is required for full certification. If plans change, transfer options to a later cohort may be available based on capacity.
How much time do I need for the online portion?
Plan around 5 to 7 hours per week during Levels 3-5, including lessons, daily practice, and live calls.
Is accommodation included?
No. Prices are for tuition only. You book your room with the resort. If you stay elsewhere, the resort charges a daily facility fee of VND 500,000 (about US$19) per person. See the 2027 room rates.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes. Choose "Payment Plan" on any option above: Level 1 is 3 monthly payments of $275, Levels 1-2 is 3 monthly payments of $615, and Levels 1-5 is 3 monthly payments of $899. The Lineage Circle is paid in full after acceptance.
Can I get a refund?
In-person trainings are not covered by our 14-day money-back guarantee. Please read our Refund Policy before you book.
